Something I didn’t think about when I was pregnant was mobiles or musical toys to get Toot to sleep. It just never crossed my mind. Luckily, we were able to get a few after she was born. I quickly found out that babies fall asleep faster with music or soothing sounds. It sounds obvious now, but I had so much on my mind during the last few months of pregnancy and the first few months with her here. Here are my top 5 picks for musical soothing toys to get your baby to sleep.
This is one thing we could not live without. This mobile/music box is what is in Toot’s crib and gets her to sleep for every nap and every night-night. The mobile part is angled at about a 45-degree angle so the little animals go up and down as well as around. And they spin freely. The only thing I didn’t like about the mobile part was that the giraffe made a clicking noise sometimes when it spun. It didn’t seem to bother Toot though.
When your baby is ready to get rid of the mobile, you can take that part off. I knew Toot was ready because she was standing up and holding onto it. It easily detaches, and you can leave the music box part in the crib or let your toddler carry it around and play with it. She’s able to press all of the buttons herself now and will usually change the music before going to sleep. It has several different song genres and two or three songs per button. I set it on the lullaby button, but she always changes it. The last button is ocean/heartbeat/white noise. It will automatically turn off 45 minutes after the last button was pressed.
It’s also easy to travel with. We took it with us to a hotel and she went right to sleep! She felt so at home with it there.
Toot has this seahorse to sleep with at my mom’s house for naptime. It turns on when you squeeze its tummy and it has a soft glow light. The music fades in and out so it doesn’t startle the baby. It only lasts for 5 minutes, though. We liked it more once Toot figured out how to work it at around 6 or 7 months. She learned how to press the button herself so we didn’t have to. It also doubles as a cuddle toy. Fisher-Price has other musical toys in this series. My BFF has a giraffe.
We got this sleep sheep from a friend who already had one for her son. It’s a stuffed animal that has a music box in it. You can tie it to the side of the crib and control it from the outside. You can also use it as a cuddle toy. The sound machine is removable if you just want to be a stuffed animal. It has four buttons with eight sounds. There’s a sound paired with a song such as rain and Rockabye Baby. This one is nice because you can set it for 23 minutes and 45 minutes.
If you’ve never heard of Daniel Tiger, you are missing out. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood is a cute show for toddlers and preschoolers that is a reimagination of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood and made by the same people. It’s very educational, and Toot loves it! She got this Goodnight Daniel Tiger for her first birthday and it helps her get sleepy some nights. If you squeeze his hand, Mom Tiger sings “Goodnight Daniel Tiger” and Tigey glows blue. It only lasts for a few minutes but Toot is old enough that she knows how to turn him back on. It’s one of her favorite musical toys to just sit and play with too.
We didn’t realize at first that there were two modes for this toy. We had it on the short mode which may be the demo or play mode and Daniel says a couple of things and you hear part of the song. Then we found the mode with just the extended song.
This whale is my BFF’s favorite thing because it puts her son to sleep. I texted her to ask her what she uses to put him to sleep while she was taking a photo of him asleep on the floor with his whale. She doesn’t leave it in the crib with him because he’d just play with it all night. But you can leave it next to the crib and it has a projector with three little pictures. You can use it with just sounds or projection or both at the same time. It turns off automatically after 15, 30, or 60 minutes.
