I’m not super into drinking. I was pretty much over it by the time I was 25. But for some reason while I was pregnant, I craved alcoholic drinks like crazy!
It might just be because I knew I wasn’t supposed to have them. But I had to have a margarita or a glass of wine.
If you’re having the same problem, I have a few solutions for you to try!

You shouldn’t drink alcohol while you’re pregnant (obviously)
I think everyone pretty much knows you shouldn’t drink because it’s too much of a risk to the baby.
My doctor told me one glass of wine every once in a while wouldn’t hurt if I really wanted it. But if I could give up caffeine in coffee, I could surely give up alcohol for basically a year.
Pro to giving up alcohol for a long time: you become a total lightweight when you do start drinking again. The first glass of wine I had after Toot was born was a wine tasting at Olive Garden.
I kid you not, even that measly amount of wine they give you to taste made me feel like I was a teenager drinking for the first time. I was over the moon.

When you just want a margarita!
Margaritas were my number one drink craving while I was pregnant. I think it was because I wanted salty and sweet together. I’m a huge fan of salt around the rim of a margarita.
The easiest way to make a virgin margarita is to get margarita mix that doesn’t come with alcohol already in it like this one and blend with some ice in your blender.
I use a Magic Bullet Blender because it blends in the cups with handles.
But if you want to get the full effect of having a margarita, get a margarita glass set.
Add frozen fruit like strawberries, pineapples, or mangoes for flavor!
Virgin Margarita Recipes you can try:
- Frozen Watermelon Margarita
- Lemon Lime with Stevia Margarita
- Frozen Peach Margarita
- Frozen Strawberry Rhubarb Margarita

Where are all my wine-o moms?
My OBGYN said it wasn’t bad to have a glass of wine here and there. Just don’t overdo it. If you can feel the alcohol, the baby can, too. So limit yourself to one glass and not very often.
Also, it’s a good idea to check with your own doctor first. Alcohol isn’t recommended even in small amounts, but your baby won’t get Fetal Alcohol Syndrome from one glass of wine at a wedding or anniversary dinner.
If you really want to drink a lot of wine, Sutter Home makes wine with no alcohol called Fre. The moscato is the highest rated on Amazon. Moscato is my favorite type of wine because it’s sweet!
Another alternative is sparkling grape juice! You can feel like a kid again on New Year’s Eve!
And a healthy version of wine: grapes. Super cold grapes. It gives you the illusion that you’re drinking sweet wine. Plus, it’s fruit. So win-win!
Beer me!
I’m not a huge fan of beer. Actually, I hate it. But if you’re a beer drinker and just want the taste of beer for some reason, they do make non-alcoholic beer.
And if you’re a Harry Potter fan, you should try Butterbeer! They actually bottle it and sell it on Amazon.
I’ve tried it before at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. It’s good but strong! It’s actually butterscotch cream soda.

I need a fruity cocktail
Fruity cocktails were a huge craving for me. I just wanted fruity everything. Even pineapple pizza! (lol)
At one time around the second trimester, I had about 12 different kinds of juices or lemonades in my fridge. I was in love with all the different flavors of Simply Lemonade.
If you’re craving a fruity cocktail, you’re in luck. Those are really easy to recreate without alcohol.
Here’s a list of fruity mocktail recipes to try:
- Sparkling Raspberry Pineapple Freeze
- Non-Alcoholic Mojito
- Good Morning Sunburst – An Orange Juice Mocktail
- Blackberry Ginger Mocktail
- Berry Sipper
- Orange Creamsicle Mocktail
- Pomegranate Lime Mocktail
- Banana Daiquiris
- Pineapple Cherry Limeade
- Hawaiian Sangria

It’s okay to crave alcohol while you’re pregnant
Craving alcohol isn’t the worst thing. Some people have pica which is where they crave things that aren’t food like dirt or the ice that builds up on the inside of the freezer.
So just because you want alcohol doesn’t make you a bad mom.
It’s pretty easy to give into those cravings without actually consuming alcohol. You just have to trick your brain a little bit.
Do you crave alcohol?

Great read! I’m lucky as I never really crave alcohol so not drinking during pregnancy was no big deal. Thank you for linking to my non-alcoholic mojito-)

I’m for sure craving wild turkey because I’m not feeling the greatest and since I’m allergic to all sinus and cold meds that’s what I take to sleep. Well now that I’m pregnant I can’t have any of it…so suffer I must (yoda voice). I’ve decided not to give up Dr Pepper or ice tea/hot tea but everything else, yes. Anyway some of these ideas are fantastic and things we could do even at a restaurant/bar with friends. Thanks, toots mom! 🙂

I had a hard time giving up soda too. But I drank caffeine free Diet Coke mostly. My husband had to drink caffeine free for a while because it gave him headaches. So that worked out pretty well. I had a hard time only drinking decaf coffee too but I had a regular cup here and there. Especially during the first trimester when I was soooooo tired.

I loved HopTea when I was pregnant. It’s new and so yummy. Totally nipped my beer craving and it has no sugar and no calories. Think they are nationally on shelf at Whole Foods now so definitely spread the word about them….perfect for prego mommas!

I’m glad that they’re are many other moms that crave alcohol when pregnant, i thought I was weird for being desperate for tequila (specifically a Paloma) when I was pregnant with my first and now all I want is a Mexican beer with my second! I still think it’s because it’s something I can’t have and that’s why I want it so bad! Like I can’t crave chocolate because if I want it, I will just have it. But alcohol, I def can’t have so I’m excitedly awaiting July!!
Niki at Toot's Mom is Tired says
Yes I totally get that!
